Hydraulic sheet shears, thanks to the enormous force created by oil compressed to high pressure, are able to cut sheet metal up to 20mm thick. They work on the principle of a guillotine, and as a cutting element they use sharpened knives made of carbide metals.

Unlike hydraulics, electricity, which is used in the work of sheet shears with an electric drive, is not able to create a large cutting force. Therefore, these machines are able to work with metal of a smaller thickness – as a rule, they are used for cutting thin sheet steel, the thickness of which does not exceed 4mm.
